I am a mixed media artist most of the time and, at heart, a quilter. After decades of hoping to become a working artist, my dream came true in January 2022 when I was accepted as a member and studio artist of the McGuffey Art Center in Charlottesville, VA.
My favorite creative projects combine my passions for art and social activism. More often than not, my artwork serves as commentary on equality and justice in America (and beyond) from human rights to women’s rights, economic and racial justice, LBGTQ rights, environmental sustainability and other vital issues. My goal is to increase awareness of the importance of equality for all and to encourage activism that drives change.
Best known for my series of Freedom Flags, I created my first art quilt in 2005, entitled Reproductive Freedom Flag, as a gift for Cecile Richards, who was then president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America. The quilt was designed to celebrate the oral contraceptive as a historical milestone in the quest for freedom from unwanted pregnancy and as a crucial part of reproductive self-determination for women and everyone with a uterus. Sadly, we are not celebrating but again fighting the war against our fundamental rights to control our own bodies.
Interest in my artwork got a huge boost in 2014 when Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Connie Schultz wrote an article about me and my flag art in article on Creators.com. The ensuing conversation on social media sparked national attention in my work. Later that year, the Dittrick Medical History Center in Cleveland acquired one of my Reproductive Freedom Flags as a part of its permanent museum collection.
I am a long-time supporter, volunteer and advocate for local and national nonprofit organizations that provide safe, accessible and affordable health care, pregnancy prevention and abortion services. A true liberal at heart, I also provide financial support to nonprofit organizations, near and far, that demonstrate shared values their efforts.
Today, I offer my works of art in my studio and the gift shop at McGuffey Art Center, my online shop, and Rethreads consignment boutique in Charlottesville, VA.
I am, and always will be, a proud liberal who joyfully sews my politics into the fabric – and canvas – of my art. I welcome the opportunity to discuss the values and issues behind my art. Don’t ever hesitate to ask.
If you don’t find me at the studio, I’m probably working in my local community garden, which is another one of my happy places.
